Mental Models from South Eastern University: How Math Shapes Coding
Completing the second year of a BSc in Physical Sciences at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka has been an intensive intellectual workout.
Between calculus, thermodynamics, linear algebra, and numerical computing, you develop a mental muscle that pays massive dividends in software development.
1. Linear Algebra and Web Graphics
Transform matrices, coordinate spaces, and vector dot products are everyday math in university. When you step into CSS transforms, canvas 2D contexts, or SVG path manipulations, you don't see magic strings — you see vector basis transformations:
v' = Matrix(Transform) * v
This makes creating custom data visualizations and interactive simulations intuitive and exciting.
2. Invariants and Proofs
In pure mathematics, you prove that a property holds true under all valid conditions.
In code, this is the exact principle behind writing clean business logic and unit tests:
- What are the pre-conditions?
- What state invariants must never be violated?
- What is the termination guarantee of our recursive or loop structures?
When you treat your functions as mathematical mappings from input domain to output range, bugs naturally have nowhere to hide.
Concluding Year Two
As I step forward into my next university terms, I'm thrilled to keep pushing both frontiers: expanding my theoretical physics knowledge while crafting resilient, human-centered software.
